‍ ‍

This course is a marriage enrichment program. It is not marriage counselling and is not suitable for marriages where destructive or abusive patterns are present. We make this distinction because:

‍ ‍

1.    Traditional marriage advice does not apply in situations involving abuse.

‍ ‍

2.    Scripture can be misused or taken out of context in these circumstances.

‍ ‍

3.    Well‑intentioned guidance can unintentionally cause further harm.

‍ ‍

A destructive marriage is one in which the personhood of one spouse is regularly diminished, dismissed, disrespected, or demeaned by the other. There is no mutual effort to repair relational wounds, and accountability is one‑sided. One partner holds power over the other—physically, emotionally, financially, mentally, or spiritually. Harm is denied, minimised, or blamed on the victim.

‍ ‍

In such relationships, the experience is not simply that marriage is difficult; it is that one feels as though they are losing themselves. There may be no freedom to speak openly, express needs, set boundaries, make decisions, or disagree without fear of heavy consequences. Chronic deceit, indifference, and a lack of safety are often present.
